History of South Carolina

South Carolina is one of the 13 original colonies of the United States. It finally became a state on May 23, 1788. South Carolina was named to honor King Charles I.  South Carolina was the very first state to vote to secede from the Union and was the founding state of the confederate states of America. The colony of Carolina was settled by English settlers, mostly from Barbados. By the time of the American Revolution, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies in America. South Carolina did not develop as planned. It split into northern and southern Carolina, creating two different colonies. It seperated because of political reasons as the settlers wanted political power. South Carolina ranks 3rd in peach production, and it ranks 4th in overall tobocco production. South Carolina generally has warm summers and mild winters. Snow falls occasionally in the upper piedmont and mountain areas, rarely elswhere.
